Arts and Culture Grant ApprovalApril 4, 2021Resources
Back in March we applied for Arts & Culture Grant to support the creation of a ‘Downtown Squamish Mural Walk’ and last week the BIA were awarded $7500!
The idea is to create both a walking and virtual tour of the murals within the DSBIA’s catchment area (between Pemberton Avenue to the north and Westminster Street to the south, and between Loggers Lane and Second Ave to the east and west), essentially the walk will be designed to pass by each and every business in our catchment area.
The best way to explore the murals in Downtown Squamish is by simply taking a stroll. Our idea is to create an accessible free year round self guided tour of both the existing and some newly commissioned (permanent and temporary) murals. These murals show the visual evidence of our diverse local cultures, history and heritage, helping us to highlight the many businesses, diversity, inclusivity and significance of downtown squamish.
Art in its many forms has the power to energize public spaces, make us think and transform where we work, live and play. Murals in public places increase the liveability and artistic richness of an area by becoming a part of the environment and creating a legacy. We have so many hidden gems that we want to highlight within the downtown neighbourhood. A mural in a well-considered location often brings a community together and improves spaces for people moving through neighbourhoods. A mural can create belonging and a sense of pride, reduce graffiti and tagging, and allow neighbourhoods to shape their community through beautification.
A mural walk will make the downtown neighbourhood more welcoming. Encourage genuine community participation thus strengthening community interactions, as well offer an opportunity for individual local artists.
This project is in collaboration with Alex Fowkes, an award winning British designer, predominantly known for his unique typographic work, installations and murals. Recently Alex became a published author with his book ‘Drawing Type’, and regularly gives lectures and workshops at Universities. You might well have seen Alex’s work as you drive into Downtown?
We have already scoped out a few spots for both permanent and temporary murals, but if you have an idea please contact Kerry Neil – executivedirector@downtownsquamish.com. We are also looking for additional sponsorship and funding and we will have a sponsorship deck to share with you very soon.
