DSBIA Fall Update
Hope summer was good to you. We all noticed Downtown was really busy!
Here is an update:
Rumble to the Rock III is getting car free on Cleveland ironically. We have got permits to shut down both blocks. We are working with Trev Deeley in Vancouver to coordinate a Harley ride from Vancouver to Downtown Squamish as well as the Classic Car Club. We expect this year’s event to be bigger than last year, pray fro sunshine!
Along Cleveland will be the most coolest Classic Cars, this will be potential get in some traffic to your shops. If you’re on 2nd, why not set up a booth in the park or on Cleveland? Get into the spirit of sidewalk sales, especially on Sept. 20th, 2009. The event is from 10 am to 4 pm. There will be a BBQ at Parkside as well as Mountain FM is one of our sponsors too!
What we ask from you? A sidewalk sale!
This year’s fundraiser will be for the Squamish Hospital, think of fun things to do to raise money!
The Board met last week and we are working on a strategy for the next few months. We are currently putting together a presentation for Council called 'Downtown Needs' what the Downtown needs from the District. Some issue brought up were: cleaning up empty lots and lane ways, safety: getting more night patrol, transportation: safely bike lanes and more buses to encourage less cars on the road, the price of retail space, a car free day every Saturday in the summer. We would like to hear more issues from you so we can present to Council as well as encourage you to come hear our presentation.
Bear Proof Bins
The downtown district garbage containers will be replaced with bear resistant models by fall. Through the Bear Aware Adopt-A-Can program, there is the opportunity for businesses to purchase a bear resistant container for the community; should any of the businesses in the BIA wish to purchase a bin, please let me Meg Toom know: mtoom@squamish.ca
MOJO signs kindly will provide stickers for the top of the bins with the donating business name and contact information, an effective form of advertising.
The issue of bears and garbage also involves accessible dumpsters.
I have attached a letter; the letter addresses the need for bear resistant dumpsters and containers. I have also attached the revised Wildlife Attractant Bylaw No. 2053 which is slated for adoption this month. The newly revised bylaw addresses commercial dumpsters and the responsibilities of ensuring that all wildlife attractants are made inaccessible to wildlife, this includes compostables and grease containers.
See attachments.
Historical Signage Project
We plan to post approximately 24 weatherproof historical signs along Cleveland and Second Avenue in the next few days. Each sign will include a historical photograph of a culturally important building or event and a short anecdote.
Our goal is to raise awareness about the colourful history of the Squamish community and provide another way to engage visitors with downtown. A valuable resource for both visitors and locals, this project will enhance the cultural legacy of the downtown area for many years to come.
That is it for now!
Hope you are doing well and let us know if you need anything!
