What is the BIA

The Downtown Squamish Business Improvement Association was established in 2006 and is a formally structured business zone modeled on successful BIAs throughout North America            .

BIAs operate not unlike major shopping centres, engaging on behalf of all businesses within the neighborhood in matters such as promotion, festivals, crime prevention, security, cleanliness, transportation, parking and advocacy.

They are established as a result of a democratic process where a majority of businesses in a district petition their local government to create an autonomous authority for both marketing and direct management of issues. A Business Improvement Association represents all businesses within a specific district of a city or region, both property owners and tenants. The Downtown Squamish BIA encompasses the area which includes Loggers Lane Cleveland Ave and 2nd Ave; as well all streets between Pemberton Ave and Westminster Ave.

In order to collect its core funding, the BIA acts as a self-taxing agency. The business membership determines the budget and then requests that the funds be collected as a levy against property taxes. As such, BIAs succeed where voluntary business organizations have often failed because the financial contribution of all properties and businesses is obligatory.

The Downtown Squamish BIA has, since its beginning three years ago, undertaken a number of projects designed to revitalize and promote the downtown neighbourhood as a vibrant hub of community activity. Some events include Canada Day, Rumble to the Rock and Happenin’ Holidays. Beautifying programs also include the new black paint on the light poles and arty bike racks.
